2014 CSAC Tournament Semifinal

BOX SCORE

SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was knocked out of the CSAC Tournament, falling 14-6 at Marywood on Tuesday in a semifinal matchup.

The third-seeded Griffins were looking to advance to their third conference championship game. The second-seeded Pacers move on to the title game on Saturday at Cabrini.

After the teams traded goals early in the contest, Marywood would add two more in the first quarter to lead 3-1 after one.  The Pacers would then outscore GM, 4-1, over the last 8:12 of the second to build an 8-3 lead at halftime.

Senior Mason Risner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore Tony McCraw (Lawnton, Pa./Central Dauphin East) each registered two goals. McCraw added an assist for a team-high three points. Junior Nico Belardo (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) and sophomore Rich Delea (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) also tallied for the Griffins. Risner's two goals put him over the career century mark, giving him 101, the first player in school history to break the 100-goal plateau.

Defensively, junior Reese Lachner (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) registered five groundballs and three caused turnovers.

Scott Slater totaled a game-high five goals for Marywood (10-7) while Riley Dobel added three goals and three assists.

Shots were almost even, with the Pacers holding a 36-35 edge. GM would fire off 13 shots in the final quarter but goalie Joe Magaral totaled 15 saves, including seven in the final quarter. Junior Ryan Murphy (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) recorded six stops.

It would be the final game for the team's three seniors: Risner, Anthony Scardina (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), and Mark Vattilana (Wilmington, De./Brandywine). Risner leaves the program with a bevy of career and single-season records. Among them is the all-time goal scorer (101), first in points per game (2.43 ppg/58 games), second in points (141). His 38 goals this season ties a single-season mark. Scardina is ranked fourth all-time in groundballs per game (2.3 gpg) while Vattilana is fifth all-time in faceoff percentage (.417).

Gwynedd Mercy finishes the 2014 season with a final record of 8-6.
